Job Summary
This position performs medical chart reviews and conducts neuropsychiatric interviews, cognitive tasks, intelligence measures and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tasks with mentally ill patients for studies related to diagnoses of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and schizophreniform disorder as well as healthy volunteers from the community. Additionally, this position requires data coding and data entry into Excel and SPSS datasets.
Organizational Status
This position works as part of Dr. Todd Woodward's research team. The position reports to and is supervised by the lab Research Coordinator and indirectly by the Principal Investigator (Dr. Woodward). Works with patients, other research staff. Liaises with mental health practitioners and technologists in the High Field Imaging Laboratory at UBC for data collection purposes.
Work Performed
Perform chart reviews to collect data. Conduct psychiatric interviews with patients including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Signs and Symptoms of Psychotic Illness (SSPI). Administer cognitive task testing with patients including the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST) and Bias Against Disconfirmatory Evidence (BADE). Administer intelligence tests with patients including the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (KBIT-2) and the National Adult Reading Test (NART). Administer cognitive tasks using the fMRI with participants with and without psychosis through fMRI Tasks at UBC Hospital. (This position does not require scheduling patients or booking the MRI as the research coordinator does that). Assists Research Coordinator in the recruitment of patients from hospital and community mental health groups to participate in research. Prepare and edit documents and presentations as required by the Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator. Enter data into Excel and SPSS. Conduct research sessions with mentally ill individuals and healthy volunteers from the community to investigate cognitive processes involved in psychosis. Research sessions occur at various locations including Riverview Hospital, UBC Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, Richmond Mental Health, Mood Disorders Association and Canadian Mental Health Association. This position is based out of Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam and University of British Columbia, Department of Psychiatry, in Vancouver. The research project involves the collection and analysis of data, including functional brain imaging results, cognitive psychology and symptom ratings on patient and healthy populations to better understand the symptoms of psychosis. The data collection will take place in the Cognitive Research Laboratory at Riverview Hospital, the Schizophrenia, Cognition and Imaging laboratory at the University of British Columbia, Department of Psychiatry, Vancouver General Hospital Cross-Cultural Psychiatry Department, as well as various community mental health agencies. Data processing (data entry and analysis) will be done at Riverview Hospital, UBC and the BC Mental Health and Addictions Services Research Institute.
Supervision Received
This position requires a great deal of independent work and decision making. Moderate supervision is provided by the Research Coordinator with minimal supervision provided by the Principal Investigator.

This position does not at this time involve supervising other research staff.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
When working with individuals with affected by mental illness, it is always essential that one exercises good decision making to ensure the safety and security of both the employee and the affected individual. This position requires the ability to make sound decisions regarding situations that may place the employee or their participant in an emotionally, psychologically or physically compromising position. Moderate level of independent decision making. Work is subject to review by Principal Investigator and/or Research Coordinator.
Qualifications
High School graduation or Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. Undergraduate degree in Psychology preferred. 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with data analysis and organization. Experience working in a research setting as well as working with individuals affected by mental illness preferred. Knowledge of scientific terminology and research methodology. Prior exposure to cognitive tests and have administered at least one test to an individual. Although training will be provided, education, training and/or experience in neuropsychiatry is considered an asset. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively use SPSS, Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet applications and tools. Ability to administer and score a variety of psychological, neuropsychiatric and cognitive test instruments. Well developed skills in data coding and data entry. Job Summary
Working under the general supervision of the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility (CHH) Facilities and Operations Manager, the imaging technician will be working in the CHH fixed and mobile imaging laboratories performing the day to day duties required to keep the laboratories running smoothly. The technician will also be required to perform and analyze scans for quality control and quality assurance purposes. Hours are flexible as assigned and may includeweekends and occasional overnight travel.
Organizational Status
Indirectly reports to the CHHM Research Operations Group Coordinator. The employee will also work with appropriate Principle Investigators (PI's), Research Associates and Research Assistants.
Work Performed
The primary responsibility of the technician will be to assist in the day to day running and maintenance of both the fixed and mobile imaging laboratories in the CHHM. In addition the technician will work actively with the CHHM Imaging Engineer to provide skilled technical services and assistance. Specific roles include: · Driving CHHM Mobile Imaging Lab and setting unit up in each research participant community · Preparing unit for projects, including daily cleaning of unit and sterilization of medical imaging equipment as required · Assisting with providing safe and high standards of customer service to research participants during each phase of the project · Maintenance and running of laboratories in line with Occupational Health, Safety, and Radiation rules and regulations · Assisting in QA and QC of all of the imaging and analysis laboratories · Ordering of supplies, specimens and equipment · Archiving and backing up of all scans and research data · Performing other related duties as assigned The technician will work at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility in the Willow Chest Centre located at Vancouver General Hospital. Travel with the Mobile Imaging lab will also be required.

The technician will report directly to the Research Facilities and Operations Manager. Duties will be assigned on a daily basis but the employee will need to work independently to carry out tasks.

The technician will supervise research personnel using imaging equipment and ensure that standard operating procedures and safety protocols are followed.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The employee will be responsible for the safe and smooth running of the CHHM Imaging Laboratories. These laboratories contain over $1.5M of state-of-the-art equipment. Lack of access to these laboratories due to malfunction of equipment would have a major impact on long term CHHM research projects that rely on the use of these high tech laboratories.
Qualifications

Job Summary
Microbiology Research Assistant/Technician within R.J. Andersen's group. This position is responsible for microbiology research, technical support and assistance to R.J. Andersen's chemistry research group, collaborators and industrial contractual associates.
Organizational Status
This position reports directly to R.J. Andersen. This position may include interaction with members of R.J. Work Performed
This position utilizes microbiological technical support as follows: Prepare reports and documentation for experimental protocols and results for use within the team. Job Summary
To perform in vitro and invivo studies involving experimental animals (mice) and cell/molecular biology techniques for diabetes research projects and to collaborate in the day-to-day operations of the biomedical diabetes research laboratory.
Organizational Status
The successful applicant will report to the principal investigator and work closely with other technicians, postdoctoral fellows, graduate, and undergraduate students in a biomedical research laboratory.
Work Performed
Caring and breeding of animals; isolating and preparing pancreatic islets; transplanting islets into diabetic mice, performing assessments of glucose homeostasis in rodents; determining glucose and hormone levels, participating in design of experiments; performing data analysis; maintaining records; performing minor rodent surgeries; performing injections, blood sampling, and administration of drugs; feeding and weighing rodents; producing specialized reagents for experiments; sampling and performing genotyping PCR; cell culture; and other related duties. Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to recognize sick animals could result in the death of valuable transgenic mice and consequent loss of valuable mouse lines and data. Mishandling of valuable pancreatic tissues or inaccuracy in record-keeping may result in the loss of samples and time, greatly increasing the costs and time required to complete experiments. Failure to carry out assays correctly would result in lost or unusable data from experiments.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. B.Sc. (M.Sc preferred) in biological sciences plus mimimum of three years of related technical experience in physiology, animal studies, molecular/cell biology, or a related discipline. 3 years relevant experience. Experience in animal studies, diabetes research, and islet biology is an asset. Experience handling and performing studies on small rodents especially mice. Experience in PCR and cell culture.
