Job Summary
The Statistician/Data Analyst will be responsible for the coordination and facilitation of all database programming and statistical analyses activities related to projects on primary cancer prevention, health promotion, adolescent tobacco control, and the investigation of the relationships between environments and health-related outcomes.
Organizational Status
The Statistician/Data Analyst will report directly to Dr. Chris Lovato, Principal Investigator. She/he will interact and work with the co-investigators, research coordinator, and other statistical and project staff on a regular basis.
Work Performed
-provide direction and support to the projects' researchers on database construction, database management and statistical research analysis -performs data analysis and statistical computation using statistical packages such as SPSS and SAS -construction of large research databases -maintenance of databases including physical security measures -development of statistical analysis procedures under broad directives of the research team to answer specific research questions -implementing statistical analysis procedures and communicating results to the researchers -performing and supervising administrative functions as they relate to the projects' analyses (such as database documentation and maintaining project reports/records/forms) -involved in dissemination activities, such as, preparing and writing reports and manuscripts The research unit is located in the James Mather Building. The work area is a large shared space. There are no known hazards.
Supervision Received
The Statistician/Data Analyst will work under the general direction of Dr. Chris Lovato, the Principal Investigator and with input from other Investigators.
Supervision Given
The Statistician/Data Analyst will not provide any supervision.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Statistician/Data Analyst is responsible for the coordination of all day-to-day activity relating to the construction, maintenance, and analyses of the research databases. Poor decisions could delay the timely completion of the project or be damaging to the reputation, and cause financial loss to the PI, the Department, the University of British Columbia and other institutions affiliated with the project(s). In addition, the impact, if an error occurred, would be the misinterpretation of results in publications. The consequences could lead to inappropriate policy and decision-making related to public health.
Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline. Degree in a relevant social science or health science, Statistics/Bio Statistics, or Computer Science discipline. 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum three years of related experience in statistical research. Minimum two years experience conducing statistical analysis. Experience working with large social science research databases. Experience with database management, computer programming and data analysis packages such as SPSS and SAS. Experience in social science research and/or evaluation studies as well as with quantitative research methods. Multi-level modeling using HLM and longitudinal analyses experience. Skills in writing reports and publishing are an asset. Knowledge of the basic principles of conducting social science research. Ability to effectively use computers and computer software (SAS and SPSS). Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Ability to gather, record, and organize information. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work in a team environment.
