Your Challenge
The Hydrogen and Fuel Cell National Program is a joint program involving NRC, NRCan and NSERC with the goal of integrating efforts across government towards a greater impact on the Canadian fuel cell and hydrogen industry. The focus of this program is on two areas: Advanced PEM and Lower Temperature SOFC.
As Research Associate- High Temperature Materials and Electrochemistry, you will work with other expert researchers to undertake scientific research, in line with the Institute’s mandate and objectives. This is an opportunity to apply your creativity, innovation, and high regard to safety to create new knowledge and also to discover new products and processes.
NRC-IFCI has extensive experience working with the national industry association, Canadian Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Association and other world leading organizations such as Ballard, AFCC, and Hydrogenics.

Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
As part of the RA Program you must have received your PhD in Materials Engineering, Materials Chemistry, Materials Physics Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Physics, or Electrochemistry within the last 5 years or you expect to receive the degree within the next 6 months.
Experience
Basic research experience with some evidence of published papers in refereed journals and/or other publications in Materials for High Temperature Electrochemical Processes and/or Solid State Electrochemistry.
Basic research experience in ceramic materials for solid oxide fuel cells would be an asset.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical Competencies: Solid knowledge of:
Ceramic materials synthesis, processing and characterization
Solid State Electrochemistry
High Temperature Thermodynamics and Kinetics
Characterization tools including XRD, SEM, TEM and Impedance Spectroscopy
Demonstrated ability to:
synthesize and characterize ceramic materials
operate experimental equipment such as TMA, XRD and SEM
carry out research independently and in a team effort
write technical reports and present scientific findings, in English, leading to publications in prestigious journals
understand and follow safety protocols and contribute to the development of safety guidelines

Salary Range
The Research Associate Program is unique to the NRC. It falls under the RO/RCO classification system which uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. In addition to the salary, employees in the RA Group are entitled to a Terminable Allowance of $8,000 per year.

The initial appointment will normally be for a two-year term. Appointments may be extended subject to the Associate's performance and subject to the requirements of NRC.
