Computer Programmer - BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS

STATUS: This is a full time position, 2-year fixed term position.
JOB START DATE: early-mid April, 2009
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
LOCATION: BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, Vancouver, BC
JOB: To assist with various computer-related tasks within the laboratory at the BC Centre for Excellence. These could include programming, data queries, monitoring equipment performance, etc. Initially, your main responsibility will be to help develop the interface, maintain and monitor access to applications we are making available on the web.
ORGANIZATION: The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (CfE) is a leading treatment and research institution located at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In addition to providing HIV drug therapy at no cost to people with HIV/AIDS living in BC, the Centre develops HIV treatment guidelines, provides education to health care providers, conducts natural history and observational studies, develops innovative laboratory tests and carries out clinical laboratory determinations.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Initially, main responsibility will be to help develop the interface, maintain and monitor access to applications we are making available on the web.
Help with analysis of experimental data.
Contribute to research projects.
Prepare technical reports and summaries as applicable.
Train new staff and students as required.
Ensure quality assurance and quality controls are maintained by keeping appropriate records and documenting problems or potential problems with procedures and equipment.
Troubleshoot problems with equipment or scripts.
Perform and record preventive maintenance on computer equipment.
Assist in preparing and updating laboratory manuals for approval by management staff.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
BSc or MSc in computer science / bioinformatics or equivalent.Knowledge of a number of computer languages with emphasis on Ruby, SQL and web development languages (HTML, CSS, JAVA, etc.).
A quick learner.
Understanding of the importance of patient confidentiality.
Job requires excellent reasoning skills for problem solving and trouble shooting.
Ability to prioritize multiple projects, make independent decisions and judiciously recognize situations needing input from senior management or other staff.
Ability to manage multiple duties, work both independently and within a team.
Experience with UNIX a definite asset
Understanding of Oracle database programming preferred but not required.
