Job Summary
To collaborate with Project Seahorse Director and other team members to produce scientific papers, to support the Director's teaching activities, and to support global data gathering network.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Project Seahorse Director. S/he will work closely with other research team members both Canadian based and internationally, and provide biological and statistical input for team members who are preparing manuscripts. S/he will also establish long-distance links to collegiate and volunteer groups around the world, to support their data gathering activities with respect to syngnathid biology.
Work Performed
- Organization and statistical analysis of ecological and fisheries data gathered internally, in order to extract key messages. - Statistical consulting and manuscript revisions with other team members. - Collaborate with other team members in projects related to data and information management. - Assist with developing standardised data gathering method for collegiate and volunteer groups wishing to engage in monitoring marine populations, and help collate and analyse their results. - Survey literature to support research and teaching. - Technical support for teaching. - Performs other duties as requested WORKING CONDITIONS This position is located at the Fisheries Centre.
Supervision Received
The Senior Research Assistant will report to Project Seahorse Director. S/he will be required to work independently as well as within a team environment.

Qualifications
High School graduation or Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. The preferred candidate will have a Masters of Science Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant biological science (e.g: ecology, conservation biology, fisheries). 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in conservation-related research and management is required. Must have the scientific skills, particularly for self-directed data analysis, at a level to co-author primary papers with senior team members. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Familiarity with issues in aquatic conservation. Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Ability to listen actively and attentively, and obtain clarification as required Excellent computer management and graphic skills. Robust database skills. Good experimental design skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work in a team environment. Must be flexible and perform well under pressure. Must be willing and prepared to render assistance after hours when required.
