Job Summary
To provide basic but essential technical support for molecular biology projects in determining the role of palmitoylation in disease.
Organizational Status
This position will assist the projects of two graduate students in the laboratory: Fiona Young, and Alicia Semaka. The position will report directly to the graduate students, who will coordinate scheduling of tasks. Ultimately the position will report to Dr. Michael Hayden who is the primary investigator of the laboratory and director of the CMMT.
Work Performed
The position involves conducting experiments that are planned together with project leaders. Accurate recording and compiling of data is critical in all tasks: Performing basic tissue culture Assist with genotyping, tail DNA extraction and PCR Plasmid DNA preps, transfections Immunoprecipitation and western blotting Biochemical assays including metabolic labeling of proteins. Position is based in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Hayden at Center for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, a state of the art research facility with all required safety precautions already in place.
Supervision Received
The position is supervised by the graduate student leading each project. Reports & planning of tasks, of a minimum 1X/week (or more often as necessary) to the three project leaders are necessary.

This is a junior position and has no supervisory responsibility.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The work described basically follows well established protocols and techniques. The position does not require significant innovative analysis. Weekly planning of tasks and experiments will be coordinated with each project leader. All important decisions will be checked by the investigators leading each project. Accuracy is very important. Errors may be costly, and may involve mixing up of mice in experiments, significant delays in repeating of key experiments, and wasting of resources.
Qualifications
High School graduation. Bachelor of Science degree preferred. 2 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge of Molecular Biology and genetics. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to follow established guidelines and protocols and to complete work assignments. Ability to complete planned work assignments unsupervised. Ability to effectively use computers and computer software. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to exercise initiative. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
