Job Summary
To participate in the research program of the PI to study the phylogenetic relationships of jumping spiders (Salticidae). Performing basic methods to obtain DNA sequences, from dissecting specimens prior to extraction, DNA extraction, PCR, to sequencing reactions.
Organizational Status
Time will be spent in the laboratory of principle investigator and in the Genetics Data Centre, Forestry. Employee will report directly to PI. Reports to the Administrator, Zoology, for administrative matters.
Work Performed
Under general supervision,

- Receives preserved specimens from PI and photographs them
- Dissects portions of specimens for DNA extraction
- Extracts DNA using standard kits
- Performs PCR for designated genes using standard primers
- Occasionally troubleshoots and adjusts protocols to optimize PCR yields by using standard techniques of lowering or raising temperatures as directed by PI.
- Prepares PCR products for sequencing.
- For some PCR products, sends to third party for sequencing. For others, performs sequencing reactions. PI makes the decision to send to a third part.
- Maintains records of voucher specimens, protocols used, chromatograms, and organizes computer files.
- Maintains records of species used and their taxonomic position.
- Monitors lab supplies and orders new supplies when needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Supervision Received
Direct supervision will be given by PI. Instructions will be given initially and will be updated on new assignments or changes in procedures. Work is subject to check by the PI. Assessment and analysis of data gathered will be done by PI.
Supervision Given
None.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors could delay the overall progress of the project and cause loss of research materials.
Qualifications
High School graduation. B.Sc. in Biology with experience in DNA extraction and PCR methods strongly preferred. 2 years relevant experience. Knowledge of salticid spider taxonomy helpful. Demonstrated ability to reliably carry out instructions without ongoing directions. Demonstrated ability to handle small arthropod specimens. Previous experience with adjusting PCR protocols for maximum yield. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. Previous experience using basic computer programs for data entry (e.g. Word, Excel), downloading and installing software, and data file organization. Accuracy and attention to detail.
UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. All qualified persons are encouraged to apply. UBC is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
