Job Summary
This position will assist with the behavioural testing of mice and the maintenance of the mice colony.

The position is based in an animal barrier facility at the Centre for Molecular Medicine at UBC. This is a research facility with all the required safety precautions in place.
Organizational Status
This position will work under the supervision of more senior technicians, but will report to Dr. Blair Leavitt who is the Principal Investigator.
Work Performed
- Assisting in performing behavioural testing of mice (observing behaviour under supervision of technician performing the test)
- Handling, weighing and observing mice
- Maintaining the mouse colony
- Taking inventory of mice
- Setting up and retiring breeders under instruction from supervisor

Weekly reports to Dr. Blair Leavitt.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The work described follows established protocols and techniques. The position requires good organizational and communication skills. Accuracy and attention to detail are important. Errors could both comprise the animal facility barrier and/or the scientific integrity of the project.
Qualifications
High School graduation. . 1 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in mouse husbandry and animal behaviour testing required. Computer experienced required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Ability to work with mice. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Organizational skill.

Job Summary
To coordinate the purchases of scientific products and equipment for all the research groups within the Centre. Maintain a computerized inventory system and generate monthly expenditure and charge out reports.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Director of The Biomedical Research Centre and works closely with members of the research labs. Interacts with all levels of faculty, staff and students at the Biomedical Research Centre; sharing knowledge and learning from the scientific community.

Reports to the Director of The Biomedical Research Centre.
Work Performed
1. Responsible for all aspects of purchasing scientific products and equipment, including placement of all orders, requests for quotations and competitive pricing.
2. Interfacing with sale representatives on behalf of The Biomedical Research Centre.
3. Purchase, maintain and restock an inventory of scientific research related consumables to ensure product is available at all times.
4. Maintain a computerized inventory system.
5. Liaison with the Supply Management and Financial Services offices to ensure all information regarding purchase orders and invoices is accurate.
6. Generate monthly account summaries and expenditure reports for each individual laboratory at the BRC, complete transfer of expenditures.
7. Receive, ship (including biologicals) and deal with customs matters for all purchases.
8. Coordinating service technicians for repairing equipment and establishing maintenance contracts for the scientific equipment, along with scheduling regular maintenance service calls for the equipment.
9. Coordinate the repair and/or return of broken or damaged products and/or equipment.
10. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of spare or replacement parts for the equipment.
11. Keep up to date with new and improved products and inform potential end users.
12. Perform other related tasks as required.

Will work in the office and laboratory areas of The Biomedical Research Centre.

Reports to the Director of The Biomedical Research Centre. Works under the general direction of the Finance and Facility Manager.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Exercises judgment and initiative in decision making situations involving work methods and procedure within a defined area, in the selection and interpretation of information and in resolving issues not clearly covered by established guidelines. Errors in negotiated terms with suppliers could lead to increased costs for grant holders and loss of discounts or special provisions.
Qualifications
High School graduation or Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. University degree (B.Sc.) in a scientific field preferred. 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in a scientific field. Direct work experience in the medical area would be an asset. Will be required to take the Air/Land Transport of Goods course on a yearly basis. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment. Ability to be motivated, exercise initiative and be self-directed. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Computer skills are required, with the ability to effectively use databases and spreadsheets. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Time management and organizational skills. Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
