Job Summary

Responsibilities will include: assisting in writing applications for grant funding and animal care approvals; order laboratory supplies; helping to prepare results from experiments for publication and presentation; laboratory data base management; overseeing research grant reporting requirements; reviewing monthly statements, reconciling expenditures with ledgers for research grants, preparing reports for granting agencies; organizing journal club and data review sessions; performing literature searches and internet based research. Other general lab duties may be assigned depending upon the experience of the applicant. A general laboratory space and office space in the Life Sciences Centre.

Job Summary
To participate in day-to day operations for an exciting research program involving longitudinal studies of asthma and allergies in children. The research activities are within the Pediatric Immunology group and are focused on the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study.
Organizational Status
The individual reports directly to the Research Coordinator but will also work in association with other research and clerical staff involved in the project.

· Visits households of study participants · Collects environmental samples according to set protocols · Stores and transports samples to the lab according to set protocols · Records experimental data needed according to good laboratory practice · Other duties as required The position involves working in the field. Successful completion of UBC's Chemical and Biohazard courses.. Since the position involves contact with families and may involve handling of samples from humans, the individual should be immunized against childhood diseases as well as tetanus and Hepatitis B. Any vaccines needed can be provided. The Employee is required to have a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

The Research Coordinator will provide close supervision and training during the initial period of employment while techniques are learned. Once trained, the individual should be able to work with basic supervision. Help will always be available for problem solving and guidance.

Job Summary
To assist with the research activities of the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Lab of Prof. Adele Diamond. The research focuses on executive control functions (such as cognitive flexibility, reasoning, inhibition, attention, and working memory) that depend on prefrontal cortex (inhibitory control, working memory, selective attention and cognitive flexibility). We focus on trying to improve these skills in young children; genetic polymorphisms that may affect these skills differently in males and females; whether decrements in these skills may precede and predict the onset of depression; supporting and helping parents to help their children succeed; and the roles of dance, music, and physical activity in improving executive functions and academic and mental health outcomes.

The Research Assistant reports directly to Dr. Diamond.
Work Performed
To conduct, and help supervise others in conducting, research activities in the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Lab. Duties include performing, and helping to supervise others in performing: -subject testing (young children thru adults). -subject recruitment and scheduling. -data entry. -statistical data analyses (using SAS and/or SPSS). -grant, manuscript, and poster preparation. -presenting posters and/or talks at scientific meetings (Opportunities for co-authorship of publications and to present findings at national meetings). -PsychInfo and Medline searches. -adding and retrieving entries in a bibliographic database (Endnote). -order lab supplies. -other related tasks. Furnished, brightly-colored office space in the Detwiller Pavilion. Therapy dog in office. Environment varies from quiet with minimal activity to very busy with lots of people in the office area. Some travel to schools and other locations for subject testing required.
Supervision Received
Works under the supervision of Prof. Diamond. Receives instructions for new assignments and for changes in procedures. Carries out duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision. All final products to be checked by Dr. Diamond.

Job Summary
We conduct research studies of infants and children whose development may be complicated due to very premature birth. The primary focus of this study is acquisition of stress hormone, and brain imaging data, along with cognitive and behavioural assessment. The Research Technician will assist with data collection and related research activities.
Organizational Status
The incumbent will interact/work with the study Co-ordinator and Lab Manager (Ivan Cepeda), the Research Nurse (Gisela Gosse), and Principal Investigator (Dr. Ruth Grunau), Co-investigators and with other members of the research team including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, research assistants, and staff from the Centre for Community Child Health Research as well as staff of the Children's and Women's Health Centre of BC and the Down Syndrome Research Foundation.
Work Performed
Phone parents to explain the study and book visits. Assist with data collection, data back up and data storage. Score questionnaires. Input acquired data on Access databases or spreadsheets. Maintain accurate records of work/patient tracking records. Keeping inventory of test supplies, ordering test supplies. Prepare, organize and keep records of research materials. Assist the Principal Investigator in research-related documentation. Assist in other tasks as required. The Centre for Community Child Health Research is located at B.C. Children's Hospital Site, in the Women's Health Centre. Dr. Grunau's lab is located on the 6th floor of the F wing. Travel to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation in Burnaby is required for children receiving data collection at that site. There are no known hazards.
Supervision Received
Specific data collection methods will be taught by the Lab Manager and the Research Nurse. Ivan Cepeda and Gisela Gosse will provide general supervision thereafter.
Supervision Given
May provide assistance to support staff, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows and students to ensure that the goals of various projects are met in a timely and efficient manner.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Centre for Community Child Health Research is one of the core centres in the Child & Family Research Institute. Errors made could influence the ability of research staff to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the Investigator.
