Job Summary
The Research Assistant will be responsible for the overall coordination of a multi-year provincial research study. Primary responsibilities include developing and maintaining systems to coordinate and communicate research activities. Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of recruitment, and training for targeted staff quality improvement initiatives.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the Research Principle Investigator. The RA position supports the Provincial Steering Committee, the Operational Team and the Senior Field Representatives. The individual is in contact with Health Authority, Hospital and University administration and staff, and project collaborators across the country. The RA will also oversee up to three part-time students.
Work Performed

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Research functions must be carried out at a high level of quality with exceptional attention to detail. This position must act independently in performing defined duties. The team is dependent on this role to maintain accuracy and currency of all research activities to ensure that timely execution of the various phases as well as avoidance of errors and omissions. Maintaining confidentiality as well as strict observance to the Ethics requirements is paramount to the ongoing operational continuation. Errors in any of the above would cause at minimum a delay in the project. Breaches of confidentiality and/or ethics requirements could potentially terminate the project. Work Performed
Successful applicant will clean and prepare reagents and sampling equipment for ocean-going research and directly participate in sampling trips to various marine locations in and around British Columbia. Participate in the collection and analysis of water samples for trace gas, nutrient and genetic analysis. Will also assist graduate students with experiments, as directed by the faculty supervisor. Working conditions: Work will be performed aboard various ocean going research vessels operated by the University of British Columbia, or the Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada under the supervision of highly trained professional crews, as well as in modern research laboratories on the UBC campus.

Hazards associated with this work include: exposure to cleaning solutions, handling of liquid nitrogen and compressed gas canisters, exposure to animal allergens, operation of large equipment such as cage washer, incubators and autoclaves.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The candidate must exercise judgment in numerous situations. The candidate will be responsible for working in accordance with all SOPs within the facility. They must exercise judgment in regards to the prioritizing tasks and coordinating their workday to ensure all duties are accomplished. Trouble-shooting of these procedures is a large part of the post. They must also report any equipment, environmental control or other problems to senior staff immediately. The position will also be responsible, in part, for organizing the daily and weekly work schedule for cryopreservation and rederivation services. They will also make decisions regarding animal health and welfare. Work is subject to check by the Manager of the Rederivation Facility. Inappropriate judgment exercised by the position may seriously impact the success of the Rederivation Facility leading to increased expenses and time loss. Additionally, inappropriate judgment may also have detrimental consequences in regards to health and welfare.
Qualifications
High School graduation or Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. AHT or BSc preferred. 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with in a transgenic barrier facility. Experience with timed matings and breeding colonies. Experience with microsurgery, embryo culture, harvesting and freezing preferred. CALAS certification preferred. Knowledge of SPF facility procedures and animal husbandry required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to gather, record, and organize information. Ability to effectively use computers and computer software. Ability to lift and carry up to 25kg and perform repetitive tasks. Ability to work weekends, statutory holidays and occasional evenings. Ability to work at multiple locations required. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
