Job Summary
The overall purpose of this position is to assist the Principle Investigator and members of the laboratory in the daily functioning of the laboratory and perform experiments.
Organizational Status
The individual will work directly and collaboratively with members of the laboratory including students, post-doctoral fellows, and the principle investigator.
Work Performed
The individual will perform DNA cloning and site directed mutagenesis experiments under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator. The techniques and skills involved include DNA preparation; PCR; site directed mutagenesis; DNA cloning; and primer design. The individual will also perform basic biochemistry experiments such as western blots and protein expression. The individual will help carry out genetic crosses, dissection, and fixations of fly tissues for immunohistochemistry, perform antibody stainings on these preparations. They will also maintain the lab's fly stocks; order reagents and make solutions and fly food; train staff; carry out ordering, tracking, recording and maintaining of equipment, reagents and supplies; reconciling expenditures; and performing other related duties. A general laboratory space in the Life Sciences Centre.

Work checked by lab supervisor. Directly responsible for errors in work; reports and corrects errors.
Qualifications
High School graduation or Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences preferred. 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum three years of related experience performing molecular biology experiments. Experience performing confocal microscopy and biochemistry an asset. Experience with Drosophila an asset. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to gather, record, and organize information. Ability to effectively use Mac computers. Practical laboratory skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Job Summary
Coordinates recruitment and booking of participants for The Early Development Research Group (comprising four labs: The Infant Studies Centre; the Baby Cognition Lab; the K.I.D. Studies Centre; and the Language Development Centre) in the Psychology Department. Assists in recruiting subjects and booking appointments, compiles and updates information, enters data.
Organizational Status
Reports to the four Lab Directors. Works closely with Lab Coordinators, students, post-doctoral fellows, and other research technicians.
Work Performed
Assists in the recruitment of subjects for studies on infant development by calling families from an existing database to gather information and schedule participation times. Compiles all public information about all the Centres in the Group. Collects, updates and formats text for brochures and posters used for recruiting. Visits new parents in a hospital setting, mails out information and study results letters, and contacts community centres and other outreach organizations for sharing information about the Group. Collects, enters and coordinates information about potential participants in an existing database. Maintains up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of the studies being carried out in the Centres, as well as needs for participants and scheduling concerns to book participants with maximal efficiency and fairness for all Centres. Attends some Centre meetings and discusses research goals with the researchers and Directors of the Centres.
Supervision Received
The employee will be under general supervision, receiving instruction when new duties are assigned and when unusual problems arise. Tasks will be assigned by the lab directors. All text produced by the employee will be reviewed by the Directors and by the Behavioural Ethics Review Board of UBC before it is made public.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Much of the work is performed according to clear procedures, and monitored; however, some individual initiative is required. Errors may result in loss of data, and the slowing down of productivity in the laboratory, or ethics approval being delayed.
Qualifications
High School graduation. B.A. in Psychology or Linguistics preferred. 1 years relevant experience. Computer experience required, preference given to those with Mac and Linux experience, and with knowledge of FileMaker Pro, HTML, and MySQL. Experience working with parents and infants, with children and with the public, and in giving public presentations would be assets for the position. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Effective organizational skills. Job Summary
The Documentation Assistant will work with museum artifacts, entering information into a limited set of fields in both an object database and a tracking survey form, following written instructions and guidelines. The position will be required to handle museum artifacts of a wide variety of sizes, and to check object inventory lists. The assistant will also be attaching bar-code tags to objects, and will work with bar-code scanners.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the Documentation Coordinator and the Documentation Lead and through them to the Collections Research Enhancement Project Lead.

This position is responsible for: 1. Generating and inputting data into an object tracking database, following specific instructions and guidelines. 2. Checking object inventory lists and attaching bar-code labels to objects. 3. Generating and inputting object accessioning data into a limited set of database fields, following specific instructions and guidelines. 4. Care and handling of museum artifacts.

The position reports to the Documentation Coordinator and the Documentation Lead and will also be supervised by other Collections department staff.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Museum is a public trustee of rare and valuable collections; the collections assistant is responsible for the safe keeping of both public and private collections. Errors could have financial, legal, ethical and other consequences for lenders and for the University.
Qualifications
High School graduation. Training in museum studies, including knowledge of accessioning processes is required. 1 years relevant experience. Experience in proper collections handling processes is required. Knowledge of the relevant professional standards for object handling and preventative conservation. Job Summary
This position will require flexibility of their availability of working hours. S/he will be responsible for maintaining the unit wash-up room and ensuring that there are no disruptions to research and flow of the units operations. This will entail all processes related to cleaning, filling and setting up mouse cages (micro-isolators) and other animal unit needs. The position is responsible for working with the supervisor in estimating and ensuring that required autoclaving needs are met during their shift. The person will occasionally be maintaining the wash-up room and unit space by managing any pressure-washing and polishing of the floors. Euthanasia of animals, as well there will be other related tasks that may be assigned on various days. The position will require will require working with soiled animal bedding and lifting bags of 23 kg. Some computer work also.

Work Performed
The employee is required to handle and sterilize equipment from the Biohazard level 2 animal holding rooms. Perform euthanasia of animals and careful disposal of bodies. Preparation of cages for use in unit, cleaning of used cages by dumping, soaking, washing and then the preparation and set up of the cages. The employee will collect cages from the cage area and take to the units wash up room, where they are responsible for checking the cage before dumping the contents, rinsing and preparing for washing. The cage is placed on racks that are wheeled into a stand alone cage washer, requiring attention to detail for safe and efficient operation. He/she maintains the wash up room & surrounding areas, the position has repetitive work with 600 cages, water bottles and other equipment to be processed each day. Each employee in the unit is responsible for Fire/ Safety of technicians working in the Annex. The employee will use various types of equipment including cage washer, autoclave, pressure washer, floor polishing machine and fumigator. Working Conditions: Updated modern animal facility that has modern equipment. On occasion working with air purifying respirators due to animal and disinfectant odours.

Once trained the incumbent will be responsible to prioritize their work based on the units needs and will review plans with supervisor.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
If the job duties are not carried out properly, critical scientific research would be affected in the aspect that researcher's animals could be infected or die causing research controls time loss and a huge financial losses to the researchers. Work is carried out independently by occasionally is checked by Research Animal Technician 4 (Supervisor).
