Job Summary
This assignment is part of a larger program evaluation being conducted by Dr. Brenda Poon and Dr. Clyde Hertzman (Co-Principal Investigators). We will be conducting 14 hours of focus groups that need to be transcribed and verified for accuracy. This qualitative study seeks to identify the factors that influence BC early childhood dental programs. **This job will NOT provide experience in a clinical or laboratory setting, and is focused in the social sciences (e.g., sociology, psychology).
Organizational Status
Transcribers will listen to focus groups which are often conducted via videoconference. Recordings will be of lower sound quality than an experienced transcriber may be accustomed to. A workstation will be provided, including digital transcription playback software. The Research Coordinator will be available to answer questions about the interviews and will work to ensure high quality recordings for listening ease.
Work Performed
o Transcribing and proofreading focus groups with public health dental staff; transcriptions will be verbatim, to capture the natural context of the interview (e.g., including laughter, silences). Neither correction of grammar nor paraphrasing is used in qualitative transcription. This transcription will be more difficult than most transcription (due to multiple participants in the recordings, some via videoconference); however, complete accuracy, word-for-word, is required for this research. o Organizing research materials verifying work for accuracy and completeness; o Ensuring proper handling of materials; o Assisting with making recommendations; o Keeping records; o Conducting literature searches; o Identifying existing research that provides background for study's activities; o Performing other related duties.
Supervision Received
The successful candidates will receive direction and detailed guidelines from the Evaluation & Research Coordinator (Amber Louie), who is also conducting the focus groups. The transcriber is expected to return transcripts within one week of receiving the recording.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The RA will make basic decisions around organizing their tasks in a meaningful and useful way. The RA will work with the Principal Investigators and other research staff and following established protocol. All work is subject to check by the Principal Investigators. The consequence of inappropriate judgment exercised by this position could be missing important and relevant information, and/or misrepresenting the projects while performing tasks of the position, which may result in additional work for the Principal Investigators. Since all work is reviewed, consequences are minimal.
Qualifications
High School graduation. . 2 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to perform word processing at 60 words per minute. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Job Summary
The research assistant will provide overall support to the Centre for Rural Health Research (principal investigators Jude Kornelsen and Stefan Grzybowski, Centre for Rural Health Research, UBC Department of Family Practice).
Organizational Status
The Centre for Rural Health Research involves academic and community-based researchers, policy makers, administrators and other key stakeholders working together to achieve a comprehensive understanding of rural health services in British Columbia. The research program and team are funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and is institutionally supported through the University of British Columbia's Department of Family Practice and the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. The core research team is located in Vancouver, however the investigators are spread across British Columbia and collaborations exist with researchers and health care practitioners in other Canadian provinces and territories and international jurisdictions. The goal of the Centre for Rural Health Research is to carry out research that evaluates the challenges facing the provision of rural health services in B.C. from multiple disciplinary and professional perspectives. This goal is based on the recognition that the erosion of rural health services in B.C. is the product of complex, inter-related influences and the implications of this erosion are multi-faceted. The research team brings together perspectives from family practice, sociology, geography, economics, epidemiology, health system and policy analysis, as well as from health care providers and administrators working in and with rural B.C. communities. The research assistant will be solely responsible for providing research assistance and support to the research team, which is comprised of 2 principal investigators, 1 research coordinator, 1 project manager, 2 doctoral fellowship students, 1 administrative assistant, and short-term student researchers. The principal investigators and coordinators will provide guidance and supervision to the research assistant.
Work Performed
Major responsibilities include: · Researching and synthesizing rural health services literature. This includes academic searches of online databases, and summarizing articles/findings in written reports and tables. · Supporting and facilitating grant applications. This includes referencing support, formatting and editing. · Contributing to and assisting investigators in the preparation of manuscripts, articles, abstracts, posters and presentations for academic journals and conferences · Assisting with the preparation of ethics applications to UBC and other organizations for upcoming projects, ensuring that ORS requirements are met; · Assisting in the organization and scheduling of fieldwork. This includes contacting potential participants, scheduling interviews, arranging accommodations and travel, and assisting in qualitative and quantitative research (i.e. coding, data entering and cleaning); and, · Collaborating with program related endeavours, including gathering, reviewing and synthesizing academic and policy literature reviews and syntheses.

Coordinator must be familiar with the current programs or equipment that will help in the performance of the job; remaining current on evolving digital technology, analysis, & hardware. - Write and present progress reports. - Perform other tasks as assigned. The coordinator's primary working environment is at the Downtown Office located at # 9 East Hastings, Vancouver, BC, and another office is also provided at the Diamond Health Care Centre in Vancouver, BC.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The person needs to be reliable and courteous with participants and colleagues, and able to work independently or in a team environment. Any errors in assessments, collation of data, analysis or recommendation might result in an unreliable report, which can jeopardize PI's decision in various phases of the study. Professionalism and timeliness of reports is of utmost importance.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Undergraduate degree in psychology or another mental health related field (social work, nursing, occupational therapy). 2 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum two years of experience with neurocognitive tests and perform neuropsychometric assessments, Maudsley Assessment of Delusions Schedule (MADS), Belief About Voices Questionnaire - Revised (VAVQ-R), Wisconsin Card Sort, Continuous Performance Test (CPT), & California Verbal Learning Test - II (CVLT-II). Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively use computers. Ability to think conceptually. Ability to exercise sound judgment. Interviewing skills and good clinical judgment (i.e. able to detect when a break is needed or when the interview should be stopped). A car is an asset; the interviews will be conducted in the Vancouver area. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
