Boreal Genomics: Research Scientist / Research Technician

Boreal Genomics, a biotechnology instrument company, is expanding its molecular biology team and is searching for both senior and junior candidates to fill Research Scientist and Research Technician positions.

Boreal is a recent University of British Columbia spin-off company commercializing a highly novel proprietary technology for nucleic acid purification. Boreal is benefitting from a close relationship with UBC and US funding entities such as NIH (National Institutes of Health), and is rapidly growing supported by non-dilutive funding and instrument sales.

The successful candidate will be responsible for working with company engineers and the nascent molecular biology team to develop novel protocols for sample preparation. He/she will assist in adapting Boreal technology to a variety of market areas, ranging from food safety, to forensics, to clinical diagnostics. The candidate will work with Boreal engineers to ensure that an optimized combination of engineering and molecular biology is delivered to our growing customer base.

Positions are immediately available for both junior and senior candidates. Substantial scientific innovation as well as detailed laboratory work is required in these positions, and as such Boreal will entertain applications from senior candidates suitable for leading the proposed research team, as well as junior but highly skilled and motivated technicians.

Responsibilities

• Perform research toward development of lysis and pre-treatment protocols for interfacing a wide variety of sample types with the Boreal DNA purification technology. • Adapt or develop assays to help test instrument performance in a wide variety of application areas. • Integrate existing sample preparation technologies with the Boreal technology to enable novel applications. • Develop user documentation and electronic instrument protocols. • Maintain accurate and complete laboratory records, including formal written and oral research progress reporting. • Training and assisting users with specific protocol development. Qualifications • B.Sc., M.Sc. or PhD. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology • Experience with DNA and RNA extraction and purification, various lysis methods, differential lysis, protein purification, nucleic acid and protein quantification assays, PCR/RT-PCR, electrophoresis, chromatography, molecular analysis techniques. • At least 3 years experience in a research laboratory environment using molecular biology technologies.

Boreal Genomics works closely with the UBC Applied Biophysics Laboratory and collaborates with the Genome BC, the BC Cancer Agency, St. Paul’s hospital, numerous local labs as well as biotech and life science research companies worldwide.
