Job Summary
Cognitive and achievement assessments to children age 7-8 years, including individual testing of attention, memory and executive function using a computerized battery; and aadminister standardized tests including cognitive screening with reduced set of WISC IV subtests, Beery test of Visual-Motor Integration, academic screen of word recognition and arithmetic calculation. Testing will be carried out at the Down Syndrome Research Foundation (DSRF) in Burnaby, since these children will receive brain imaging using magnetoencephalography (MEG) which is located at that centre. Assessments will be done as part of a study of neurobehavioral development of premature infants and term-born controls, for Dr. Ruth Grunau (Principal Investigator -PI). This study will be conducted on weekdays part-time during July and August, and on occasional Saturdays or Sundays from Sept to June.
Organizational Status
The incumbent will report directly to Ivan Cepeda, Lab Manager, who is also the Research Coordinator of the study and will also interact with other members of Dr. Grunau's research team within the Centre for Community Child Health Research. The incumbent will be employed by Dr. Ruth E. Grunau (Principal Investigator). The research study headquarters is located in the Centre for Community Child Health Research, on the site of BC Children's Hospital.
Work Performed
Meet the child and parent at the Down Syndrome Research Foundation (DSRF), obtain parent signature for informed consent and child assent. Set up and take down testing equipment Measure attention, memory and executive function using a computerized battery. Administer standardized tests including cognitive screening with reduced set of WISC IV subtests, Beery test of Visual-Motor Integration, academic screen of word recognition and arithmetic calculation. Score standardized tests Write a research summary of test results for parents with a Registered Psychologist Analyze data collected Collect child and parent saliva samples several times during the session (on arrival, before and after individual testing, and end of session). Complete a Study Day Information Sheet The Centre for Community Child Health Research is located at Womens' and Children's Health Crentre of B.C. The work area is shared space.

Ivan Cepeda, lab manager, will provide general supervision of work performed and will provide the main contact and tracking of work done by the incumbent.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This program of research in development of infants born premature is conducted within the Early Human Experience Unit in the Centre for Community Child Health Research (CCCHR) The Centre is core component of the Child and Family Research Institute. Errors made could influence the ability of the PI to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects and affect funding applications, thereby impacting the credibility of the Investigator. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of and cause financial loss to the Principal Investigator, The Centre, the Research Institute and the University.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. Masters in School Psychology, Educational Psychology, or Developmental Psychology preferred. Successful completion of a supervised practicum in individual assessment of children. 4 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience administering cognitive tests to children is essential, as well as experience in independent writing of reports. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel. Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Ability to learn new software programs. Demonstrated ability to perform activities. Physical ability to perform the duties of the job. Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work in a team environment. Valid Drivers License. Car available for driving between the Down Syndrome Research Foundation centre and the Children's & Women's Health Centre of BC.

Job Summary
We conduct research studies of infants and children whose development may be complicated due to very premature birth. The primary focus of this study is acquisition of stress hormone and brain imaging data, along with cognitive and behavioural assessment. The Research Technician will assist with data collection and related research activities.
Organizational Status
The incumbent will interact/work with the study Co-ordinator and Lab Manager (Ivan Cepeda), the Research Nurse (Gisela Gosse), and Principal Investigator (Dr. Ruth Grunau), Co-investigators and with other members of the research team including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, research assistants, and staff from the Centre for Community Child Health Research, as well as staff of the Children's & Women's Health Centre of BC and the Down Syndrome Research Foundation.

Phone parents to explain the study and book visits Assist with data collection, data back up and data storage Score questionnaires Input acquired data on Access databases or spreadsheets Maintain accurate records of work/patient tracking Keeping inventory of test supplies, ordering test supplies Prepare, organize and keep records of research materials Assist the Principal Investigator in research-related documentation Assist in other tasks as required The Centre for Community Child Health Research is located at B.C. Children's Hospital Site, in the Women's Health Centre. Dr. Grunau's lab is located on the 6th floor of the F wing. Travel to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation in Burnaby is required for children receiving data collection at that site. There are no known hazards.
Supervision Received
Specific data collection methods will be taught by the Lab Manager and the Research Nurse. Ivan Cepeda and Gisela Gosse will provide general supervision thereafter.
Supervision Given
May provide assistance to support staff, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows and students to ensure that the goals of various projects are met in a timely and efficient manner.
