Job Summary
The principal role for the individual will be to generate transgenic constructs for transformation of Drosophila melanogaster. These will be utilized by the individual toward their own project, and also to teach and assist personnel on the techniques. The secondary role will be to perform and assist personnel in the lab with biochemical techniques, notably in Chromatin- and Co-Immunoprecipitation, Electrophoretic mobility shift assays, Protein extraction and Cellular transfection. The individual will perform additional laboratory duties, to be agreed by the Supervisor and the Individual, as well as assist in monitoring reagent consumption and laboratory finances.
Organizational Status
Will consult with the Principal Investigator with problems and when new methods are being used. Will assist graduate students with techniques. Fully responsible for independent experiments and outcomes.
Work Performed
Molecular biology to construct transgenes, using P-element, integrase and P[acman]-based transgene vectors, for Drosophila transformation. Maintain cell lines and assist graduate students in protein extraction and protein/DNA biochemical experimentation, such as Co-IP, ChIP and EMSA. Monitor stocks of key lab reagents, such as molecular biology enzymes, and order key reagents as necessary. Assume responsibility for a subset of basic lab maintenance, in agreement with the Supervisor. Maintain lab inventory and records, vendor searches, ordering supplies, procuring quotes. Monitor and maintain lab finances. Keep clean records of all purchases, payments, purchase orders, reconcile financial statements and report variances to the PI on a monthly basis. Other duties as may be required by the Principal Investigator.
Supervision Received
Works under the direction of the Supervisor (Dr. Allan) and in collaboration with the Research Associate.
Supervision Given
Assists and trains Graduate student students in molecular biology and biochemical techniques.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Follow procedures and protocols as outlined by supervisor. Unusual problems are referred to supervisor. Consequence of error could result in incorrect results which could lead to delays in publications or loss of grant funding.
Qualifications
High School graduation or Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute, such as B.C.I.T. University degree (B.Sc.a or above in Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology or Biochemistry) with a minimum of three years experience working with many facets of molecular biology and biochemistry required . 3 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with transgene construction and protein/DNA interaction studies preferred. Ability to follow and carry out instructions, and to resolve technical problems. Effective communication and organizational skills as well as the ability to work both independently and within a team environment is required. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate research and technical reports and proposals
